Box Score Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team led 3-0 through five innings Tuesday evening, but LMU scored five unanswered in the sixth and seventh to pick up the 5-4 victory.
It was a staff day for both teams as the Highlanders (20-25) sent nine pitchers to the mound, while LMU countered with seven. Jacob Worrell tossed a scoreless first, and Ryan Lillie did likewise in the second, and the UC Riverside offense staked its pitchers to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Aaron Cisneros led of the frame with a single to right, and Mark Contreras followed with a double to right center. Lions' starter Blake Redman retired the next two batters, but Casey Wordan singled to left scoring the pair.
The Highlanders made it a 3-0 ballgame in the third as Vince Fernandez drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a fielding error by the second baseman on a Cisneros' chopper, and scored when Contreras singled through the left side.
It remained a 3-0 game until the top of the sixth when the Lions bats woke up against reliever Max Compton. The sophomore didn't retire any of the four batters he faced, and three of those runners came around to score. Alex Fagalde (3-1) took over for Compton and got out of the sixth, but in the seventh, LMU (26-23) put together a two-out rally plating two runs to take the lead.
Vince Fernandez sliced the Lions lead to one with a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth, but Michael Silva retired the side in order in the ninth to close out the win, and pick up his first save of the season.
UC Riverside heads back out on the road this weekend, traveling to Hawai'i for a three-game, Big West Conference series.
