Vince Fernandez Named Big West Field Player of the Week

Irvine, CA—The Big West announced today that UC Riverside outfielder Vince Fernandez is the conference FIeld Player of the Week for games played from May 16-22. It is the second time this season that the Livermore, California native has been honored as the Big West Field Player of the Week (March 28-April 3).

Fernandez helped the Highlanders to a 3-1 record with three, three-hit games, and had 10 hits in 19 at-bats for the week. Three of those hits went for extra bases. He posted a .550 on-base percentage and .895 slugging percentage.
 
Fernandez, who leads the Big West in hits with 75, picked up three in four at-bats in UCR's 8-3 victory against San Diego State on Tuesday. He scored three times, and clubbed his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot to right in the second inning.
 
Moving back into conference play, Fernandez helped the Highlanders post a series victory over Cal Poly. He laced an RBI single in UCR's 6-4 win to open the series.
 
In game two, an 11-5 triumph, Fernandez went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. He had an RBI single in the sixth and knocked home another run with a double in the eighth.
 
Fernandez posted his third, three-hit game of the week in Sunday's 6-4 loss. He smashed his eighth home run of the year and drove in two, increasing his RBI total to 41, which ranks No. 4 in the Big West. He has nine RBIs in the last five games, and has five multiple-hit games in his last six.
