Irvine, CA—The Big West announced today that UC Riverside outfielder Vince Fernandez is the conference FIeld Player of the Week for games played from May 16-22. It is the second time this season that the Livermore, California native has been honored as the Big West Field Player of the Week (
March 28-April 3).

Fernandez helped the Highlanders to a 3-1 record with three, three-hit games, and had 10 hits in 19 at-bats for the week. Three of those hits went for extra bases. He posted a .550 on-base percentage and .895 slugging percentage.
Fernandez, who leads the Big West in hits with 75, picked up three in four at-bats in UCR's 8-3 victory against San Diego State on Tuesday. He scored three times, and clubbed his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot to right in the second inning.
Moving back into conference play, Fernandez helped the Highlanders post a series victory over Cal Poly. He laced an RBI single in UCR's 6-4 win to open the series.
In game two, an 11-5 triumph, Fernandez went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. He had an RBI single in the sixth and knocked home another run with a double in the eighth.
Fernandez posted his third, three-hit game of the week in Sunday's 6-4 loss. He smashed his eighth home run of the year and drove in two, increasing his RBI total to 41, which ranks No. 4 in the Big West. He has nine RBIs in the last five games, and has five multiple-hit games in his last six.
