Men's Soccer Knocks Off #20 Gonzaga, 2-1

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team knocked off nationally-ranked (#20) Gonzaga Sunday afternoon, as Eduardo Sanchez and Raul Guerrero scored the first goals of their Highlanders career in the 2-1 victory.

A battle of attrition was on the docket as temperatures in the Inland Empire soared past 100 degrees. Neither team generated much in the way of offensive chances in the first half, with both goalies called on for just one save apiece.

Early in the second half, Gonzaga's Colton Cavey extolled his teammates, loud enough for the crowd to hear, exclaiming that the Highlanders were tiring. What was supposed to serve as motivation for the Bulldogs (5-2-1), backfired, as just a handful of possessions later, Sanchez (Bloomington, CA) stole the ball in Gonzaga's end of the field, and beat the 'Zags keeper to the right side of the goal, putting the Highlanders (4-3-0) up 1-0 in the 55th minute of play.

Just over five minutes later, Sanchez again snagged an errant pass in the 'Zags defensive end, and drove the right corner. This time, he crossed the ball past the mouth of the goal where Guerrero (Buellton, CA) was there to one-time it into the back of the net for a 2--0 Highlanders' lead.

Gonzaga pushed to get on the board, and finally did so in the 86th minute off of a Ben White corner kick. Austin Giftopoulos rose above the crowd and headed the ball over UC Riverside goalkeeper Vincent Morales' (Bellflower, CA) outstretched arms.

That was all the offense the 'Zags could generate however, as the Highlanders secured their eighth win over a top-25 team in the last six seasons.
