Cold Shooting Third Quarter Dooms Women's Basketball In, 72-55, Loss At UC Davis

Box Score Davis, CA–The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team was done in by a cold shooting third quarter in which they shot two for 18, and were outscored 26-4 by UC Davis in their, 72-55, loss Thursday night.

UCR led 20-19 at the end of one, aided by eight and six points from Simone DeCoud and Lauren Holt respectively. Each player went 2-2 from long distance, but  the Highlanders shot just 4-14 from two point range in the opening 10 minutes.

The flow of play was able to progress freely as just two fouls, against the Highlanders, were called in the entire opening period.

In the second period Davis started out on a 15-4 run over the first five minutes of the half to go up by 10, 34-24. At 1:52 in the second the only foul against Aggies as Morgan Bertsch was whistled for an offensive foul when DeCoud boldly stepped in.

UCR held Davis scoreless over final 4:08 of second period and outscored them, 7-0, get the score to, 34-31, at the break.

Coming out of the locker room the host scored the first nine points of the period, before DeCoud got in the lane for a score ending the nearly three minute UCR scoring drought.

The Aggies responded with their second spurt of the period, this time 17-2 to closeout the period with a 64-39 advantage.

The Highlanders shot 2-18 (11.1%) from the field in the, 0-6 from three, and failed to get the line in the woeful third quarter

In the 26-4 third frame, Pele Gianotti scored eight of her game-high 22 points for the Aggies, who shot 10-16 (62.5%), 3-4 from distance, and made all three of their attempts at charity stripe.

The Highlanders reserves outscored Davis 20-12 in the fourth to cut the final margin to 17, as the game would end 72-55.

Holt finished with 11 points to lead the Highlanders. Réjane Verin recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points to go with 10 rebounds, and DeCoud added 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.

UC Riverside will continue on the road, as they will travel Long Beach to face the first place 49ers on Saturday at 4 pm.
