Women's Basketball Battles, But Can't Keep Pace With No. 7 UCLA In 68-48 Defeat

Los Angeles, CA—Facing a difficult test at No. 7 UCLA (6-1) on Tuesday night, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (1-6) held the Bruins under 70 points for just the third time this season. However, that didn't stop UCLA from pulling away early, as it never looked back on the way to a 68-48 victory. Senior guard Michelle Curry scored a team-high 15 points for the Highlanders in her return to the lineup.

KEY RUN
After a 7-0 UCR run cut the Highlanders' deficit to 9-7 midway through the first, the Bruins closed the opening half on a 25-10 run, taking a 34-17 lead into halftime.

GAME NOTES
UC Riverside trailed 9-0 out of the gates, but that would be its largest deficit of the opening period, as UCLA went on to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter. The Highlanders held the home side to just 5-of-17 (.294) from the field in the first, but the visitors were cold as well, going 3-of-16 (.188).

The 14 points allowed in the first were the second-fewest that UCR's defense has conceded in the first quarter this season. The fewest the Highlanders have given up is 11, in their 68-56 win at Fresno State on Nov. 19 (box score/recap).

Several days after giving up a program record 42 free throw attempts to Sacramento State, the Highlanders cleaned it up in the foul game, giving up season-lows in both free throw makes (7) and attempts (11). UCR committed 17 fouls on the night, its second-lowest total of the season.

Jannon Otto finished with four points and a season-high nine rebounds. Her previous season-high in boards had been five, a mark she reached before the halftime break at UCLA.

Clémence Lefebvre tallied season-highs of nine points (3-4 FG) and three assists off the bench. Lauren Holt added seven points and two steals.

With 15 points on 7-for-16 from the field, Michelle Curry has now scored 12 or more points in 14 of her last 16 games played.

Marina Ewodo had three assists, making it three straight appearances with three or more helpers. Skyler Lewis also set a new season-high with three assists.

UCR's defense forced UCLA into 18 turnovers, its second-highest total of the season. The Bruins knocked down 42.2 percent of their shots on the night, slightly under their season-average coming into the game (.458). UCLA was also held to 12.5 points fewer than their season-average (80.5 ppg) coming into the night.

The Highlanders will head to Tempe, Arizona this weekend where they will play the final two games of their season-long seven game road trip. UCR will begin the ASU Classic against UNLV on Saturday at 10:30 am.
