Box Score Los Angeles, CA—UCLA kept the UC Riverside Baseball Team's offense off balance for seven innings Tuesday evening, but Mark Contreras blasted a two-run home run in the top of the eighth, powering the Highlanders to a 3-2 victory (
listen to Ghizal Hasan and David Gascon's call of the home run).
Prior to Contreras' blast, UC Riverside (2-1) had collected just one hit on the night—a lead off single in the top of the first by Colby Schultz.
Between those two base knocks, UCLA starter Jon Olsen and reliever Justin Hooper struck out 13 batters over seven-and-a-third innings. The tide turned in the top of the eighth, however. Trailing 2-0, the Highlanders finally got to Hooper (0-1) as be battled wildness, walking Cody Sporrer and Michael Farris with one out.
A wild pitch advanced both runners 90 feet, and UCLA (2-1) brought in Brian Gadsby in relief. Schultz grounded out to second, scoring Sporrer, and Contreras ripped a 3-2 offering over the right field wall to put the Highlanders up, 3-2.
Hazahel Quijada and Ryan Lillie combined to pitch two scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory.
Trenton Toplikar was credited with the win tossing a scoreless seventh inning. Angel Landazuri got the start for the Highlanders, going six innings, scattering five hits and walking three while Lillie recorded his first save of the season.
The Bruins took an early lead over the Highlanders, touching Landazuri for a single run in the bottom of the second, by sandwiching a pair of two-out singles around a walk and a wild pitch.
It remained a 1-0 game until the sixth when UCLA opened their half of the frame with back-to-back singles, and scored their second run of the game thanks to a sac bunt and a sac fly.
The Highlanders remain on the road this week traveling to Fresno State for a three-game series with the Bulldogs.
