Irvine–This afternoon the Big West conference announced that UC Riverside sophomore Kyle McCann (San Jose, CA/Los Alamitos HS) earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after winning a combined four matches and helping the Highlanders to a pair of victories.
McCann helped guide the Highlanders to wins over Whittier (7-0) and Western New Mexico (5-2). He won both of his No. 2 singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Whittier's Thomas Koszowski.
At No. 3 doubles, McCann teamed with Max Cohen to win twice. They eked out a tough battle with WNM's Blayze O'Keefe and Zachary Grabovic, prevailing 7-5.
"This is a great accomplishment for Kyle. He demands a lot from himself and his teammates at all times, and this just shows that hard work pays off", said Head Coach Mattias Johansson of McCann. "He has come such a long way this past year, and I'm very happy for him–well deserved."
McCann honor is the first for the team this season. Last year Sean Yun secured the weekly award on March 16 (
