Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team, which allowed just four runs to K-State in a three-game series over the weekend, allowed 10 Tuesday to Gonzaga as the Bulldogs banged ot 13 hits en route to a 10-3 victory.
Angel Landazuri (1-2) took the loss for the Highlanders, lasting 1.2 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs. That tied the right-handers shortest outing of his collegiate career, as he pitched 1.2 innings in a start against UC Davis on April 3, 2016 surrendering six hits and seven runs.
Johnny Breidenthal put a halt to the Bulldogs scoring, recording the final out of the second, and working a perfect top of the third.
The UC Riverside (10-6) offense got two runs back in the bottom of the second, touching Gonzaga starter Daniel Beis (1-1) for three singles and a walk in the frame. Daniel Martinez's single drove home UC Riverside's first run of the contest plating Connor Cannon, and a bases loaded wild pitch brought Yeager Taylor home with run number two.
The Highlanders loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third as well, but were unable to score.
After Breidenthal retired the first batter in the top of the fourth, he plunked a batter, and gave up a single and a walk to put Bulldogs on every base. Jeff Bohling lifted a sac fly to center to make it 4-2 Gonzaga (7-9), and Tyler Frost ripped a 2-0 offering over the right field wall to give the 'Zags a five-run cushion.
Ricky Delgado took over for Briedenthal to start the fifth, and was touched for a pair of unearned runs which made it 9-2 Bulldogs.
Taylor drove in the Highlanders' third run of the night in the bottom of the fifth, but Gonzaga got it right back in the top of the sixth. That is where the score remained as both teams put up goose eggs for the rest of the evening.
UC Riverside remains at home this weekend for a three-game series against CSU Bakersfield.
