Five Players In Double Figures Help Coach Margaritis Notch 200th Career Win, 92-60 Against UC Irvine

Long Beach, CA–Simone DeCoud and Lauren Holt each posted double-doubles to lead five players in double figures in the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team's 92-60 victory over UC Irvine in the first round of the Big West Tournament.

Head Women's Basketball John Margaritis is now the fourth coach in Big West Women's Basketball history to reach 200 wins.

DeCoud, who did not start due to an ankle injury, came off the bench to post game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the year.

Holt also logged her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

UCR fell behind 8-0 in the first two minutes of play, before Coach Margaritis inserted DeCoud into the game. They would close the quarter by outscoring UC Irvine, 22-8, in taking a six-point margin into the second period.

The Highlanders continued to outpoint the Anteaters in the second, led by Malou De Kergret, who scored nine of her 15 points on the night in the second period on 4-5 shooting.

46-33 would be the halftime score with the Highlanders having taken advantage of 10 first half turnovers by Irvine, which they converted into 11 points.

Michelle Curry and Holt had eight points apiece at the intermission. Curry, however had amassed three fouls in just 12 minutes of play in the first half.

With 6:54 remaining in the third and UCR ahead by 11, 52-41, Curry was whistled for her fourth foul of the game.  She jogged over towards the bench thinking she ws going to subbed out of the game, instead Coach Margaritis told her, "I am going to play you until you foul out, so play your game."

The junior from Los Angeles then proceeded to score seven of the team's next nine points, which helped them build the lead to as many as 23 by the end of the frame.

Entering the fourth with the score, 69-46, and only the final margin in doubt, Holt and DeCoud matched the 'Eaters team total with six and eight points respectively in the period.

UC Riverside would cruise to the 92-60 victory in the opening game of the Big West Tournament to set up a Wednesday night meeting with UCSB at 8:30 pm in the Walter Pyramid.

Curry would finish with 20 points in 27 minutes, while Clemence Lefebvre scored 11 on 5-8 shooting. Andee Ritter had 20 points (5-10 3ptrs) to lead UC Irvine, who also got 13 from Irene Chavez.

The 92 points put up by the blue and gold is the most in any game this season, and their five players in double figures was a season first as was the three players with 20 or more points in the same game.
