Riverside—UC Riverside and #10 Cal State Fullerton engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher duel for eight innings Saturday evening, but the Titans scored four runs in the ninth to claim a 6-1 victory. The win evened the three game series between the clubs at one game apiece.
Ryan Lillie (0-3) was making his second start of the season for the Highlanders, and his first since opening day. Cal State Fullerton greeted him rudely, leading off the game with three singles to load the bases. Taylor Bryant drew a walk to plate the Titans' first run of the game, and Hunter Cullen reached on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 Fullerton.
Lillie settled down nicely after that, though, retiring 15 of the next 16 batters, including 12 in a row at one point.
Connor Cannon sliced the Titans' advantage in half in the bottom of the fourth, leading off the frame with a solo shot over the left field wall. The Highlanders (12-10) threatened to tie the game later that inning, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Cal State Fullerton starter Gavin Velasquez (3-0) induced a ground ball off the bat of Tony Gudino to end the rally.
Both teams put zeroes up on the board over the next several innings, as Velasquez gave way to Erik Cha in the seventh, and Lillie turned things over to Angel Landazuri in the eighth.
The Highlanders appeared to have something brewing in their half of the eighth, when Colby Schultz led off the frame with a double. But Schultz was caught leaning too far towards third, and was picked off second base by the Titans' catcher.
After Cha picked up the second out of the inning, Cal State Fullerton (16-10) turned the game over to their closer Brett Conine. Cannon worked a 3-1 count, and then singled up the middle to keep the rally alive, but Conine retired Mark Contreras on a come-backer to the mound to end the inning.
The Titans put the game out of reach with four runs in the top of the ninth, and Conine closed things out with a scoreless bottom of the frame for his fifth save of the year.
The Highlanders and Titans play game three of their three-game, Big West series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
