Northridge, CA—Alex Fagalde scattered seven hits over 7.2 innings and didn't allow an earned run Saturday, but CSUN took advantage of a pair of Highlanders defensive miscues, en route to a 3-0 victory.
UC Riverside's (13-21, 2-9) best scoring opportunity of the day came in the top of the second as the Highlanders banged out three singles. A double play erased one of those base runners, and UCR stranded the other two.
CSUN (19-21, 6-5) took the lead in their half of the second, picking up their first unearned run of the game. Nolan Bumstead got things started, reaching on an error by Highlanders' right fielder Cade Peters. One batter later, Dylan Alexander singled up the middle, scoring Baumstead from second.
It remained a 1-0 game until the bottom of the eighth, as Fagalde (5-3) and CSUN starter Andrew Weston (5-1) traded zeroes.
Fagalde retired the first two Matadors of the inning, but Bumstead singled to right center, and Riley Conlan reached via a hit by pitch. Head Coach Troy Percival went to his bullpen, bringing in Jared Morton to face Alexander with runners on first and second.
An error by shortstop Colby Schultz allowed Alexander to reach, loading the bases for pinch hitter William Colantono. Colantono's single to right played two, for the final three-run margin of victory.
The Highlanders and Matadors conclude their three-game series, Sunday, beginning at 1 pm PT.
