Box Score Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth Friday afternoon at UC Davis, but the bullpen couldn't hold on, as the Aggies won, 4-3, in 10 innings.
Ryan Lillie tossed seven innings of near-flawless baseball for the Highlanders, scattering three hits and allowing just a single unearned run.
Matt Hardy gave him a two-run cushion in the top of the second, smacking a two-out, two-run home run to left which scored Tony Gudino.
After UC Davis (16-25, 8-11) sliced the Highlanders' lead in half in the fourth, Michael Farris put UC Riverside back on top by two, with an RBI single in the top of the sixth that plated Mark Contreras.
Lillie turned the ball over to Jared Morton in the bottom of the eighth, and the right hander struck out the first two batters he faced, before Cameron Olson turned on a 3-1 offering and deposited it over the right field fence, to make it 3-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Morton struck out the first batter, but fell victim to the long-ball once again when Mark Cardinalli took him over the left field wall, sending the game into extra innings.
The Highlanders put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the 10th, but a double-play grounder ended the threat.
Angel Landazuri (3-4) came on to pitch the bottom of the 10th for UC Riverside (18-27, 4-12), and he recorded the first two outs of the inning on a ground out and a liner back to the mound. Unfortunately, the next three batters connected on singles, the last of which brought home the game-winning run.
Zach Stone (5-2) picked up the win for UC Davis, as he pitched the final two-thirds of an inning in the top of the 10th.
The Highlanders and Aggies play game two of their three-game series on Saturday, ay 13 beginning at 1 pm PT.
