Landazuri Tosses Five Innings Of One-Hit Relief In 9-3 Victory Over UC Irvine

Riverside—Angel Landazuri tossed five innings of one-hit relief Saturday evening as the UC Riverside Baseball Team turned an early two-run deficit into a, 9-3, victory over visiting UC Irvine. The win evened the three-game Big West Conference series between the clubs at one game apiece.

Trailing 3-1 after three innings, the Highlanders (20-29, 6-14) loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and cut the deficit in half when Tony Gudino lifted a sacrifice fly to right center that scored Yeager Taylor from third.

Landazuri (4-4) came on in relief of Ricky Delgado in the top of the fifth, and completely shut down the Anteaters' offense. Only two batter reached base during his five innings of work—a double in the ninth after the game was already decided, and a fielding error in the seventh.

The Highlanders got to the Anteaters (20-31, 7-13) pen after three innings, and that proved to be the difference as they plated three runs off of Andre Pallante (6-4), and four off of Michael Martin.

Tayler's double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth drove in Mark Contreras and AJ Sawyer with the tying and go-ahead runs, and Michael Farris' single up the middle that same inning scored Tayler to make it 5-3 UC Riverside.

It remained a 5-3 game until the bottom of the eighth. UCR sent nine men to the plate in the inning, and got RBIs from Cade Peters, Colby Schultz, Contreras and Sawyer for the final six-run margin of victory.

The Highlanders and Anteaters play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT. UC Riverside will honor the 10 members of its senior class in ceremonies prior to first pitch.
