Baseball Drops Monday Matinee To Oregon, 10-6

Riverside—One day after pounding out 13 hits and 12 runs, the UC Riverside Baseball Team was held hitless through the first five innings, Monday, eventually falling to visiting Oregon, 10-6.

Zach Noll (2-2) pitched the first five innings for the Ducks (29-23) and didn't allow a single hit, walking two and striking out a season-high seven batters.

James Acuna took over on the mound for Oregon in the bottom of the sixth, and Tony Gudino promptly ended the no-no with a double to right center. He was stranded there, however, as Acuna retired the next three Highlanders in order. The Ducks led 3-0 at that point, having scored a pair in the top of the first off of UC Riverside starter Matt Hardy (0-1), and a single run off of Jared Morton in the fourth.

Nick Shur came out of the bullpen in the sixth, and allowed two runs in his two innings of work to give the visitors a five-run cushion.

With Noll gone, the Highlanders (21-30) finally began to chip away at the Oregon relief corps. A hit batter, and a double to left center in the bottom of the seventh put AJ Sawyer on third, and Ian Nowak on second. One batter later, Cody Sporrer's double to left center cut the Ducks' advantage to three, 5-2.

Oregon got one of those runs back in the top of the eighth off of Alex Fagalde, who was making his first appearance since the previous weekend. The senior rolled his ankle last week, and was held out of the UC Irvine series.

Trenton Toplikar allowed four runs to the Ducks in the top of the ninth, and Oregon needed them, as the Highlanders battled back in the bottom half of the inning. Gudino singled up the middle scoring Cade Peters, and Colby Schultz blasted a three-run home run to right with two outs to slice the lead to four, 10-6.

However Jesse Hobaica got the next batter, Mark Contreras, to ground out to first for the final out of the game.

The Highlanders finish their 2017 season on the road this Thursday through Saturday with a three-game series at Cal Poly.
