Riverside—The Miami Marlins selected UC Riverside pitcher Ryan Lillie, Tuesday, with the 14th pick in the fifth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
That is the highest draft position for a member of the Highlanders since the San Diego Padres selected UCR pitcher Matt Andriese in the third round of the 2011 Draft. Andriese is now a starter with the Tampa Bay Rays, with a 5-1 record and a 3.54 ERA in 2017.

Shortly after the Marlins called Lillie's name, the Minnesota Twins selected Highlanders' outfielder Mark Contreras with the first pick of the ninth round. The last time UC Riverside had a position player selected higher than the ninth round was in 2010 when the Detroit Tigers took catcher Robert Brantly in the third round. Brantly has played parts of three seasons in the big leagues with Miami and the Chicago White Sox, and is currently in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Rounds 11 through 40 of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft is scheduled for Wednesday, June 14. Round 11 begins at 9 am PT.
