Riverside—The St. Louis Cardinals selected UC Riverside pitcher Alex Fagalde today in the 30th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Ryan Lillie and Mark Contreras were chosen Tuesday by the Miami Marlins (5th round) and the Minnesota Twins (9th round) respectively.
In addition, three Highlanders' recruits heard their names called on the final day of the draft: Nate Webb in the 26th round by the Oakland A's; Cole Percival in the 31st round by the Arizona Diamondbacks; and Dean Miller in the 37th round by the Atlanta Braves.
Fagalde led the Highlanders this season with seven wins and a 3.39 ERA. He also held opponents to a .230 batting average, striking out 63 in 79.2 innings of work.
