Mark Contreras, Colby Schultz Named All-Big West

Irvine, CA—The Big West announced the 2017 Baseball All-Conference honorees this week, and UC Riverside's Mark Contreras was named to the All-Big West First Team, while Colby Schultz earned a spot on the Second Team.

Despite missing most of the month of March with an injury, Contreras (Moreno Valley, CA) finished second in the Big West with a .366 batting average, third with a .427 on base percentage, fifth with a .558 slugging percentage, and first in triples.

The senior's batting average is the highest for a member of the Highlanders since the NCAA changed the composition of the bats to decrease scoring. Contreras also tied the NCAA record for most triples in a single game, legging out three in UC Riverside's road win at San Diego State on April 25.

Schultz (San Juan Capistrano, CA) finished his season with a slash line of .296/.372/.408, all of which ranked in the top 30 in the league. His 15 doubles were the fourth most in the Big West, and his 38 runs scored were seventh. Schultz also ranked in the top 10 in the conference in base hits, total bases and walks.

Defensively, he finished ninth in the Big West in assists (128) and double plays turned (26).
