Men's Tennis Matches 4 & 5 |
Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team notched their second victory of the season, 7-0, over Westmont in the first match of the double-header Saturday, before falling to UC San Diego, 3-4, in the afternoon match.
UCR 7, Westmont 0
The Highlanders secured the doubles point, winning the first two of three matches. The pairings of Kyle McCann and Filip Engstrom, and Anderson Ju and Nabil Abdallah, have both won three doubles matches on the season. Kyle McCann also has a fourth doubles win paired with Pawel Jankowiak, and is 4-0 in doubles overall.
In singles play, UCR swept all six matches. Filip Engstrom made his career debut in singles, and was victorious on court three (7-5, 6-7, 12-10).
"We got the doubles point after solid play from no. 2 and no. 3, and won three singles rather quickly to secure the match win. It is great for us to erase the 3-6 loss from last season from our memory." said Coach Mattias Johansson.
UCR 3, UCSD 4
In the second match of the day on the SRC tennis courts, UCR fell 3-4 to UCSD.
The Tritons took the doubles point, winning two of three doubles matches. UCSD stretched its lead to four, winning the first three singles matches of the afternoon. The Highlanders battled back and won the remaining three singles matches, but were unable to take the match.
Coach Johansson on the loss; "Another very close loss, we just need to find a way to get one more point in these kind of matches. Nabil and Vignesh moved to 5-0 in singles. We need to find someone else to step it up for the team on a consistent basis."
