THE UCR HIGHLANDER: Highlanders Unable To Collect Any More Wins

Riverside—Apparently somewhat letdown after the big win against Cal Baptist a week ago Friday, the Highlander hoop forces bowed to two strong quintets the past week, making the record for the season thus far 2-10 for Frank Lindeburg's charges.
Friday action found the Highlanders on the short end of a 67-50 count against the Cal Tech Engineers, in a tussle played on the home hardwoods.
And last Tuesday the Clan treked towards the coast and aged battle with the Forty Niners of Long Beach State, an aggregation who had previously bombarded the Highlanders 96-49 on the local boards. Not much better this time around, with the Stater crew waltzing to a 90-53 decision.
However, the Clan kept some of the high scoring 49er stars from tallying as much as often in this battle. One Hollis Harvey, though, romped to 18 counters from his guard spot. Harvey was blanked the first time around.
With Harvey and mates Frank Morandindi and Tom Sutherlin pacing the attack, the hosts sped to a 43-24 halftime lead and coasted from there on in.
Ron Endeman, junior forward from Riverside, looked exceptionally sharp for the Highlanders as he wound up with the second best basket-making effort of the evening, a creditable 16 markers.
Following in the wake of Endeman's top total was guard Ray Zouhar with 12.
Sophie Ray, from El Centro, scored most of his on close-ins.
Forward Rags Wilhelms trailed Endeman and Zouhar with 11.
In the Cal Tech fracas, a genuine inability to find the rung hurt the Scots chances for their third win of the year. The Engineers started right off and by the time the Clan could get in gear the Techmen had navigated to a 35-25 midway advantage.
Last year's tussle was a bit closer with the Engineers rallying in the waning moments to a 57-46 victory.
Tech guard Bill Emmerling emerged highest on the scoring totem pole with 21 markers, trailed closely by backcourt mate Jerry Stene, who rang up 18. Center Jim Converse was close behind with 16.
For the Scots, a uniform team effort resulted in no outstanding scoreboard nickers, with six of the eight scores tallying within three points of each other. High for the Highlanders was guard Dave Geary with nine, Ray Zouhar was the next with eight and center Larry Crim, guard Dick Moore and brother Don Moore at forward all cashing in for seven. Rags Wilhelms was next hitting for six.
