THE UCR HIGHLANDER: Clan Breaks Even
2/11/1959 1:33:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Coach Frank Lindeburg's cagers used the last two weeks of classes and the semester break to add three wins and three loses to their season's record. The Clan started off with a double overtime 69-65 victory over La Verne which the Highlanders were barely able to win after twice seeming to have the contest locked up.
Cal Tech then visited and the Engineers were easy 65-57 victims as Bob Wills scored 19 and Ray Zouhar 16.
UCR entertained Occidental next and thanks to the worst Highlander effort of the year, Oxy led 40-26 at halftime. UCR came out of their ineffective zone in the second half and pulled up to a three point deficit before succumbing 62-74. Wills scored 21.
Eleven players took a two game trip to Phoenix immediately after finals and UCR dropped both contests to good ball clubs, The first night a white-hot Luke Air Force Base team ran up a 62-42 halftime lead and carried on to a 101-84 victory. Wills scored 26 and Don Moore 18 while three Luke players scored 24 or more.
Grand Canyon College was the host the next night and they played a rough and aggressive game which left the Highlanders far behind the Grand Canyon coasted to a 85-57 victory. Wills scored 21 for the only bright spot in an otherwise miserable evening.
Returning to their beloved Southland the Clan traveled to Claremont-Mudd and easily broke a zone defense for a 84-71 victory, Wills scored 21 and Moore 17. Dave Tyler's seven field goals and Warren Blakely's passing were the main weapons in breaking open the Stag defense.
