Alamo Named to Academic All-District VIII Team

Riverside—UC Riverside junior goalkeepr Charles Alamo has been selected as a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, it was announced Thursday. This is Alamo's first appearance on the All-District team and he is the first Highlander men's soccer player to gain the honor since Aaron Allen in 2001.
As one of 11 players selected to the District VIII university team, Alamo will be entered into a national pool along with members of the other seven districts, where he will be eligible for Academic All-American status. Voting is conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).
After missing all but three games in 2005 due to injury, Alamo (San Luis Obispo, CA/San Luis Obispo HS) has played every second of the 2006 season, setting a UCR single-season record with 1,679:14 minutes played. He leads the Big West Conference with 74 saves, the third-highest total in UCR history. Earlier this year, he was named the Big West Player of the Week for posting back-to-back shutouts against UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge. He has three shutouts on the season.
Alamo is already the Highlanders' career leader in saves (220), wins (16), and minutes played (4,304:03). He carries a 3.67 grade-point-average and is majoring in political science. In 2004-05, he was named to the Big West Conference All-Academic Team.
