Santa Barbara, CA—UC Riverside closed out its 2006 season with a 4-0 defeat at UC Santa Barbara Saturday night at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara. The Highlanders end the year with a record of 5-12-2, 2-6-2 in the Big West Conference while the Gauchos clinch their second conference title in three years to improve to 12-7-0, 7-3-0.
The Highlanders entered the match looking for their second straight victory over UCSB, having snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Gauchos with a 1-0 victory in Riverside on October 11. The hosts, on the other hand, knew that it would need a win to claim the Big West crown after UC Irvine's 1-0 loss to Cal State Northridge earlier in the day. UCR put pressure on the Gauchos early, with sophomore forward Joel Crompton (Pleasanton, CA) and junior midfielder Brandon Plummer (Huntington Beach, CA) each registering shots in the opening 10 minutes.
The Gauchos grabbed the lead at 13:58 through Eric Frimpong. Eric Avila provided the assist. The goal seemed to give UCSB life, as they pushed forward and forced junior goalkeeper Charles Alamo (San Luis Obispo, CA) into a pair of saves. The Gauchos went ahead 2-0 seven minutes before halftime through Nick Perera off a feed from Chris Pontius.
Alamo came through with three more saves to start the second half but UCR fell a further goal behind in the 66th minute as Avila made it 3-0. Ten minutes later, Brennan Tennelle completed the scoring.
Alamo made six saves for the Highlanders to run his Big West-leading total to 80 on the season. The saves total ties for the second-most in a single season in UCR history. UCSB's Kyle Reynish had three saves.
