The University of Arizona evened up its series against UC Riverside with a 4-2 victory in front of 608 fans Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders fall to 4-2 while the Wildcats improve to 3-2 on the season.
Arizona got all the runs it would need in the first two innings, scoring three times off of UCR freshman starter D.J. Smith (0-1). Brad Boyer singled on the game’s first pitch and Jason Donald followed with an RBI double down the left field line. With one out, Konrad Schmidt singled through the left side, bringing home Donald. The Wildcats increased their lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI double by T.J. Steele. Smith lasted just one more batter, going 1 2/3 innings in his debut as a starter.
UCR cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the second thanks to a double by sophomore 3B Aaron Wible and consecutive singles by sophomore 2B Drew Garcia, sophomore C Jeff Dunbar, and junior CF Brett Bigler.
The score remained 3-2 until the top of the ninth, when Arizona added an insurance run on a two-out double by Steele and single by Jon Gaston. UCR got a man aboard in the ninth but could not rally.
The pitching stories of the day belonged to the two relievers. After Smith was knocked from the game, junior LHP Pat Cassa came in and delivered 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball, allowing one run and striking out four in the no-decision.
Arizona reliever Mark Melancon (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Mike Colla. Melancon entered with one out in the fifth and closed out the game, allowing just two hits and striking out five.
Dunbar was 3-for-3 with an RBI for UCR while Bigler collected his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
