UC Irvine junior Justin Cassel hurled a five-hit shutout to lead the Anteaters to a 5-0 win over UC Riverside Friday at Anteater Ballpark. The shutout was lifted the Anteaters to 35-21 overall and 10-9 in the Big West while the Highlanders dropped to 28-24 overall and 8-11 in conference play.
Cassel, who improved to 7-8, faced the minimum through 7.2 innings before senior 3B Brian Steinmeyer singled and advanced to second on an error by Taylor Holiday. Junior LF D.J. Hollingsworth drew a walk before junior 1B Kyle Barratt would pop up to catcher Aaron Lowenstein to end the inning. Cassel struck out four and walked two in his fourth complete game of the season.
UC Irvine scored four runs in the third, all with two outs. Danny McCarthy was hit by the pitch and Holiday pushed McCarthy to second on a single up the middle. After Ben Orloff?s sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, second baseman Cody Cipriano delivered a 1-0 pitch up the middle to score both runs. Jaime Martinez singled and designated hitter Zach Robinson followed with a double to right-center to give UCI a 4-0 lead.
