Irvine, CA—UC Riverside senior midfielder Erasmo Solorzano has been selected the Big West Conference's Player of the Week for August 28-September 3, the conference office announced Monday. This is Solorzano's first career Player of the Week award.
Solorzano (Riverside, CA/Riverside Poly HS) proved the difference last Tuesday in the Highlanders' first victory of the season. The senior scored both goals, including the game-winner with 3:28 remaining, as UCR won its home opener, 2-1 over UNLV. After opening the scoring in a curling free kick in the 20th minute, he then netted the game-winner in the 86th minute after slicing through the Rebel defense.
Solorzano's two strikes marked the first time in his career that he had a multi-goal game as well as doubled his career goal total. He is the first Highlander to net two goals in a game since Scott Barnett achieved the feat on October 30, 2004 against UC Davis, tying the school single-game record.
Solorzano is the first Highlander to receive the Big West Conference Player of the Week award this season and is the first men's soccer player to earn the accolade since Kyle Ochoa for October 10-16, 2005.
