Riverside—UC Riverside senior midfielder Erasmo Solorzano became the first Highlander ever to be drafted by Major League Soccer, as he was selected by Chivas USA in the second round of the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft, conducted Thursday. Solorzano was the 20th player taken overall in the supplemental draft and the first of five Big West Conference players selected.
Solorzano (Riverside, CA/Riverside Poly HS) enjoyed a fine career with his hometown university, appearing in 62 games and scoring four goals. His senior season was highlighted by a pair of goals, including the game-winner, on August 29 against UNLV, an effort that earned him his first career Big West Player of the Week honor.
Solorzano is the first Highlander to be involved in the United States' top soccer league. Former teammates Tre Lee (Miami FC) and Luc Harrington (Charleston Battery) currently play in the United Soccer Leagues.
Based in Carson, CA, Chivas USA is the newest of the 12 Major League Soccer teams, commencing play in 2005. It is the sister team of Mexican League giant Club Deportivo Guadalajara, popularly known as "Chivas". Chivas USA went 10-13-9 and earned the third playoff spot from the Western Conference last season, losing in the conference semifinals to eventual MLS Champion Houston.
UCR went 5-12-2 overall in 2006 under third-year Head Coach Junior Gonzalez.
