Davis, CA—UC Riverside lost its conference opener, 2-1, to UC Davis Wednesday afternoon in Davis, CA. Freshman Cito Soriano scored the lone goal for the Highlanders who fall to 3-3-2, 0-1 in the Big West. The Aggies improve their record to 6-2-1 and 1-1 so far in their first year as a member of the Big West Conference.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Soriano picked up his team-leading third goal of the season at the 4:03 mark. Senor Steven Kaufman picked up his first assist of the season when Soriano found the back of the net with a header off of Kaufman's free kick that came from just outside the box.
Despite being outshot 6-2 in the first half, UCR played very well in the half and took a 1-0 lead into the break. But just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Aggies took advantage of their own free kick when Matt Slagle snuck a shot past Highlander senior keeper Charles Alamo to make it 1-1.
Both teams continued to pressure one another as time wound down in regulation. UC Davis took eight shots in the second half but Alamo continued to man the post making an unbelievable save late in the match to keep the score even.
With less than five minutes left in regulation and UCR on the verge of having to play its third consecutive overtime match, the Aggies were awarded another free-kick. This time from the top of the box at the 85:52mark Dylan Curtis took the free-kick and got it over the Highlander wall of players and past Alamo to take a 2-1 advantage with only minutes left on the clock.
UC Davis held off a last minute rush from the Highlanders to take the match 2-1. The final shot total showed a 14-5 advantage for the Aggies. A total of 34 fouls were called throughout the day with18 whistled against UCR.
