Irvine, CA—UC Riverside needed a late goal from senior captain Joel Crompton in the 89th minute to escape with a 1-1 tie with UC Irvine in Irvine, CA Tuesday night. Senior keeper Charles Alamo matched a season-high in saves with eight, as the Highlanders (5-6-7 Overall, 2-4-5 Big West) played to their seventh tie of the season.
UCR was able to overcome senior Andrew Villalobos's red-card in the 24th minute as both squads played a match that featured 32 fouls called throughout the night, including five yellow cards and two red cards.
The game was decided in the last three minutes with the Anteaters (6-7-5 overall, 1-6-3 Big West) taking the 1-0 lead in the 87th on Shane Westbrook's goal.
Having to play with only 10 players for most of the match, the Highlanders continued to battle and turned up the pressure as time wound down. Crompton took a cross from senior Brandon Plummer and banged it past Irvine keeper Pat Barton to tie the match at 1-1 with less than one minute to play.
UCR fired four shots in the final overtime period but none found the back of the net and the game ended in a tie.
