Riverside—Senior goalkeeper and 2007 Big West Keeper of the Year Charles Alamo was selected as the fourth pick of second round by the LA Galaxy in the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft Thursday afternoon. This is the second consecutive year that UC Riverside has had a player drafted after Chivas USA took former Highlander Erasmo Solorzano in the second round of the last year's supplemental draft.
Alamo (San Luis Obispo, CA/ San Luis Obispo HS) is coming off of one of the best seasons and careers in Big West Conference history. He was named the conference keeper of the year and earned his first career Big West First-Team honor after leading the conference in saves (79), saves per game (4.16), was third in shutouts (6) and fourth in goals against average (1.03 PPG). He posted six shutouts this season including one against #21 San Diego State (9/4) that earned him player of the week. He also blanked #25 Cal Poly (10/27) and limited #9 UC Santa Barbara to one goal in his final collegiate match, a 1-1 tie with the 2006 NCAA defending national champions (11/17/08).
He is the UCR all-time leader in goalie wins, saves, minutes played, matches played, and shutouts. He picked up two career Big West Player of the Week awards and was named to the COSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 team both his junior and senior seasons. On the Big West career lists, he finished out his career ranked second with 67 matches in goal and seventh with 16 career shutouts.
LA Galaxy training camp begins in early February.
