Four days after upsetting seventh-ranked UC Davis, UC Riverside's men's soccer team was looking to make it two conference wins in a row in a road match at Cal State Fullerton Wednesday evening, but they came out on the short end of a 3-1 decision.
An uneventful first half saw the Highlanders (4-10-1, 1-5-0) outshoot the Titans 3-1 in the period, but neither team was able to score. Things changed in the second, however, as Cal State Fullerton (4-11-1, 1-4-1) turned up the pressure, scoring with just 2:05 gone in the period as Jose Gomez found Nick Posthuma on a perfectly timed run for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Titans lead.
Just over 11 minuets later, T.J. Detviler corralled a loose ball in the box and sent it past Highlanders keeper Ryan Schmitz (San Diego, CA) into the back of the net for a 2-0 CSF advantage. The Titans' Shay Spitz tacked on another goal with 17:45 remaining in the match to put them up 3-0.
UC Riverside finally got on the board following a red card issued to CSF's Tony Terrazas. Joel Crompton (Pleasanton, CA) scored on the ensuing free kick from 25 yards out for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Titans outshot UCR 11-6 in the second period.
The Highlanders return to the UCR Soccer Stadium on Saturday, October 25 for a non-conference match against CSU Bakersfield at 3 pm.
