Javon Borum scored six of his game-high 21 points during a 10-0 run that broke open a 49-49 ballgame at the UCR Student Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders Men's Basketball Team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 59-52 win over Northern Arizona. The win moves UC Riverside (2-1) over .500 for just the fourth time in the team's seven-plus year Division I history.
Through the first eight minutes of play, the prospect of the Highlanders' second win of the season seemed far away as the Lumberjacks scored the first six points of the game and used a press on defense to build an 11-4 lead with 12:07 to go in the period.
UCR finally settled into a rhythm and scored the next 10 points to take a three-point lead with 8:07 to go. The Highlanders led in the period by as many as five and took a four-point lead into the locker room at halftime.
Northern Arizona kept things close, however, and retook the lead with 10:12 to go in the game 40-39. Four minutes later, UCR went on a 6-0 run to build a seven-point lead and appeared on their way to closing out the game, but the Lumberjacks, but two Highlanders' turnovers helped Northern Arizona tie the game up at 49, setting the stage for Borum's heroics.
He got plenty of help on the afternoon as Aaron Scott recorded his second career double with a career-high 14 rebounds and 12 points. Christian Soto came off the bench to record his first double-digit rebound effort of the season and Sean Cunningham posted his first double-digit scoring effort (10 points) of the season on 5 of 7 shooting from the field.
