The UC Riverside softball team dropped both ends of a double-header Saturday afternoon to Cal State Fullerton getting shut out in the first game, 11-0, and falling in the second game 7-3. The losses drop the Highlanders to 14-24 on the year and 0-5 in Big West competition. Fullerton improves to 18-18-1 overall and 2-3 in The Big West.
The Titans' Christine Hiner pitched a two-hitter in Game 1 as starting pitcher Marissa Alvidrez and third baseman Kristie Martinez were the only Highlanders to reach base. April Murray had her 13 game hitting streak snapped going 0-3 with a strikeout and two groundouts.
Fullerton pushed one run across in the first inning and two in the fourth off of Alvidrez before breaking the game open with an eight-run sixth.
Hiner took the circle for the Titans again in Game 2, and held UCR scoreless through the first five innings as Fullerton built a 7-0 lead off of Highlander starter Stephanie Marshall. Marshall gave way in the fourth to senior Christin Songer who pitched two-and-a-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.
In the top half of the sixth, the Highlanders mounted a comeback pushing across three runs by stringing together two singles two walks and a two-RBI double by center fielder Tiana Towns. However Hiner held UCR to a Veronica Yee single in the top of the seventh to close out the game.
The final game of the three-game series is set for Sunday, April 6 at noon at Fullerton's Anderson Field.
