UCR Drops Two At Saint Mary’s Invitational

UC Riverside lost a 9-2 decision to San Jose State and also fell 6-4 to Saint Mary’s in their first day at the Saint Mary’s Invitational Friday. Junior first baseman Katie Curtis led the Highlanders (10-17) with four hits and four RBI on the day.
In the opener, SJSU (14-16) used a three-run first inning and a four-run fourth inning to pick up the victory. UCR picked up a run in the fifth on a Curtis RBI single and Curtis brought home the second Riverside run with another RBI single in the seventh.
Senior starting pitcher Christin Songer (3-5) suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs and striking out one in her four-inning effort.
In their second game of the day, the Highlander offense came to life, banging out 12 hits but was only able to bring four runners across. Saint Mary’s (7-10) took advantage of two UCR errors and recorded 11 hits of their own to pick up the win. After allowing to SMU runs in the top of the first, the Highlanders answered with two in their half.
Curtis continued to pound the ball, smacking a one-out double to left center to bring home senior left fielder Roni Yee and sophomore pitcher Marissa Alvidrez and tie the game at 2-2.
Saint Mary’s brought single runs across in the second and third innings to take a 4-2 lead into the fourth. UCR closed the gap to 4-3 after senior right fielder April Murray’s bases-loaded infield single scored freshman third baseman Brooke Hebenton.
Again SMU answered the Highlander run with two of their own in the fifth. The Highlanders put together a small rally in the sixth on junior Amanda Klimczak’s pitch-hit RBI base-hit to right, scoring junior centerfielder Tiana Towns to cut it to 6-4. Two innings later, UCR’s first two batters each singled to lead off the seventh but Riverside was unable to bring the tying runs across.
Alvidrez (2-5) suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs, striking out four in her seven innings of work, and recorded three hits at the plate. Curtis, Murray, and freshman Taylor Thomas each collected two hits.
UCR continues play at the Saint Mary’s invite Saturday.
