UCR Uses Last At-Bat To Pick Up Win

UC Riverside rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Utah Valley State 2-1 and battled Big-10 power Iowa tough but dropped a 4-0 decision in the second day of the Amy S. Harrison Classic hosted by UC Riverside Saturday.
Junior Tiana Towns' pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave UCR (9-15) a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Utah Valley State in their first game of the day.
Trailing 1-0, senior Kristie Martinez drew a walk to open the Highlander seventh and junior Katie Curtis followed with a free pass of her own to set up first and second with nobody out. Senior Cassie Greenawalt then layed down a perfect bunt, pressuring the Wolverine defense into a committing an error, throwing wide of first base and allowing the game-tying run to come across.
With runners at second and third and still with no outs, UCR was in position to pick up the win. Freshman Taylor Thomas drew a walk that loaded the bases for Towns. Towns jumped on the first pitch she saw, smoking a ball to left field, bringing home the game-winner.
Sophomore starting pitcher Marissa Alvidrez (2-4) picked up the win after striking out four in her complete game effort.
In their second game of the day, the Highlanders struggled to get anything going against Iowa starting pitcher Brittany Weil. Weil finished the game with 11 strikeouts to pick up the 4-0 win for the Hawkeyes. Junior starter Stephanie Marshall (2-6) suffered the loss for UCR after allowing three earned runs in 2.1 innings.
The Highlanders close out Amy S. Harrison Classic play against Buffalo at 11 a.m.
In other tournament action, Iowa beat Buffalo 11-0 in six innings.
