UC Riverside Head Men’s Soccer Coach “Junior” Gonzalez announced today that the Highlanders will open their 2008 schedule with four straight matches against teams ranked in Top-30 from a year ago and six overall matches against that same top competition.
The season begins with road matches against traditional national powers California (Friday, August 29) and UCLA (Sunday, August 31). September sees the Highlanders participate in three tournaments – the Creighton Tournament (Fri., Sept. 5 – Sun., Sept. 7), which begins with UCR facing off against the Blue Jays and ends with a match against Saint Louis; the UNLV NIKE Invitational (Fri., Sept. 12 – Sun., Sept. 14), featuring matches against Oral Roberts and Gonzaga; and the Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament (Sat., Sept. 20 – Sun., Sept. 21), which pits the Highlanders against IUPUI and Western Illinois.
UC Riverside’s home schedule beings with its first-ever night match at the UCR Soccer Complex on Thursday, October 2 against Houston Baptist, while the 2008 Big West Conference portion of the schedule kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Cal State Northridge.
The top four teams advance to The Big West Conference Tournament slated for November 12 and 15. Sites and times for the tournament are determined based on final 2008 standings.
The Highlanders have seven starters returning this season including 2007 All-Big West honorees David Lozano (junior defender), and Nathan Paterson (junior forward). Last year’s squad went 5-6-8 overall including 2-4-6 and a fifth place finish in the Big West.
