After opening the 2008 season with four straight losses to ranked opponents, the UCR Men's Soccer Team (2-4) now has its first winning streak of the year following wins over Oral Roberts and Gonzaga in the UNLV Nike Invitational this weekend. In winning both games, the Highlanders also laid claim to the tournament championship finishing as the lone undefeated team in the four-team event.
The 3-2 win over the Bulldogs didn't come easily as the Highlanders found themselves in the middle of a 2-0 hole following Tim Muraves' second goal of the afternoon with 8:20 gone in the second period. UCR finally got on the board less then three minutes later when Nathan Paterson (Modesto, CA) chipped in a shot from 10 yards out over the keeper's head.
The Highlanders struck again with 27 minutes remaining in the second as Michael Vega (Fontana, CA) corralled a Scott Dailey (San Dimas, CA) free kick and deposited it in the back of the net to tie the match at two. It looked like the teams might be headed into overtime, but a Robert Cate (Alameda, CA) header with 2:21 to go gave UCR the game-winner.
UC Riverside travels to the Green Bay Nike Soccer Classic this weekend where they will face IUPUI on Sept. 20 at 10 am PT and Western Illinois on Sept. 21 at 10 am.
