Men's Tennis Opens Season With 4-3 Win Over Air Force

(Murrieta, CA) – The UC Riverside Men's Tennis team (1-0) opened up the 2009 season with a 4-3 win against the United States Air Force Academy on Sunday afternoon in Murrieta, CA.
After dropping the doubles point, UCR came back and took four of the six singles matches to claim the victory. John Park (Alhambra, CA) finished first for the Highlanders as he evened the score at one all after defeating Mike Gies 6-0, 6-2. Yi Chai (Norwalk, CA) then won his match at the sixth spot to put UCR up 2-1.
UCR's Gorjan Kovacevic (Tiburon, CA) and Felix Macherez (Montpellier, France) fell 6-3, 6-3 and 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 respectively in their singles matches, giving Air Force a 3-2 advantage. But the Highlanders rallied by winning the last two matches as Quoc Doan (Yorba Linda, CA) came back from a first set loss to defeat Brett Rodgers 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Raineir Matias (Torrance, CA) closed out the match in a tie-breaker third set marathon, 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
The Highlanders return to the courts next Sunday, Jan. 25 as they take on Sacramento State at 12:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Complex in Riverside, CA.
