
Four Players Score in Double Figures as Highlanders Defeat Cal State Fullerton

Riverside, CA – Four players scored in double figures for the UC Riverside Women's Basketball team as they defeated Cal State Northridge 69-56 in a gritty Big West Conference matchup on Saturday evening at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside. The Highlanders improve to 11-9 on the year and 7-1 in conference play.
Up by four with six minutes to go, UCR began a 12-0 run in a two and half minute span that broke open the game as they took a 16-point lead, 65-49, with 2:30 remaining. The Titans (6-13, 3-5) narrowed the margin to 12, 65-53, with 1:26 left, but the Highlanders tallied four more points to close out the game with a 69-56 victory.
UCR shot 48.2 percent from the floor as Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA) scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-17 from the field and 7-of-7 from the strike. Tainoisouti Lott (Moreno Valley, CA) and Ronéy Friend (Los Angeles, CA) each added 11 points while Chanel Foster (Tustin, CA) tied her season-high with 10 points.
The first half was very much of an up-and-back battle as there were five tie scores and nine lead changes throughout. Cal State Fullerton got on board first, but UCR took their first lead of the game, 6-4, on a Foster layup at the 17:19 mark.
The Titans re-took the lead, 16-15, at the 10:48 mark, but the Highlanders countered 20 seconds later with a jumper by Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar, CA) as UCR went into the locker with a 35-29 lead.The Highlanders travel to Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 5 and to UC Davis on Saturday, Feb 7 as they begin the second-half of Big West play.
