No. 7 UC Santa Barbara Scores Early, Holds On For 1-0 Win Over UCR
10/10/2009 9:23:14 PM | Men's Soccer
No. 7 UC Santa Barbara 1, UC Riverside 0
For 89 minutes, the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team went toe to toe with the seventh ranked team in the nation, but a Gauchos goal just 49 seconds into the match held up Saturday as UC Santa Barbara emerged with the 1-0 win.
Ryan Schmitz (pictured) got the start in goal for the Highlanders (1-10-0, 0-3-0), but before the fans in attendance could get settled in their seats, the Gauchos David Walker tracked down a deflected ball in the UC Riverside box and slid it past Schmitz.
The Highlanders regrouped, outshooting UC Santa Barbara (9-2-1, 3-0-0) in the first half 5-2. They came out of the gates hard in the second with two shots on goal in the first 2:12 after the break, but Gauchos keeper Sam Hayden was there to stop them both.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the remainder of the way, as UCSB escaped with the 1-0 victory.
The Highlanders travel to UC Irvine, Wednesday, for a 7 pm PT tile against the Anteaters.
