Volleyball Splits NorCal Roadtrip With 3-0 Loss At UC Davis

Davis, CA - Coming off their second Big West win of the season at Pacific on Friday evening, the UC Riverside volleyball team looked to make it two wins in a row on Saturday, but would face stiff competition as they played at first-place UC Davis. The Aggies (18-7, 9-3) showed why they lead the Big West standings, however, sweeping the Highlanders (4-17, 2-9) with scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-11.
Tonbara Youpele led UCR with 10 kills whlie Katherine Castillo recorded nine digs, Brittney Murrey (pictured) posted a game-high 30 assists, and Bianca Endersby and Dominique Cowling recorded three blocks assists apiece.
UC Davis opened up a 5-1 lead early on in the first set, but the Highlanders went on a 10-5 run to take an 11-10 lead capped off by a Shelby LeDuff kill. UCR led by two points at three more junctures down the stretch before the Aggies took the lead for good at 18-17 as they went on to win the first set 25-19.
In the second set UC Davis again opened up a 7-1 lead in the early moment of play, but UC Riverside rallied to within one, 18-17, on a Murrey service ace. The Aggies pushed their lead out to 24-20 at set point, but not before the Highlanders scored three straight to close the margin to one, 24-23. After a UCD timeout, however, the Aggies responded with a set-ending block to win 25-23.
UCR continues Big West play with a 7:00 pm match on Friday, Nov. 6 against Cal State Northridge followed by a non-conference match with CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 pm. Both matches are at the Student Recreation Center in Riverside.
