Women's Basketball Can't Hang On, Falls 63-58 To Hawaii

Riverside, CA - The Rainbow Wahine took their first lead of the game off two free throws from Breanna Arbuckle with 2:33 remaining in the second half as Hawaii overcame a 12-point deficit near the end of the first period to come away with the 63-58 victory over host UC Riverside on Tuesday afternoon at the Student Rec Center.
The Highlanders (1-2) led by 12 points with just over two minutes to go in the first half, but a 9-2 run by Hawaii (1-0), including a last second layup at the buzzer, closed the margin to six, 38-32, as both teams headed into the locker rooms.
Hawaii continued to chip away at UCR's lead in the second half, and with 11:21 remaining the Rainbow Wahine tied the game at 43 apiece. The Highlanders then rallied and opened up a five point lead at three different junctures within the next five minutes, but with 2:33 to go Arbuckle's free throws gave Hawaii the lead for good.
UCR was hot from three-point land in the first half, connecting on six long balls, but could not make one three-pointer in the second half. The Highlanders also went cold from the field after the break, hitting just 6-of-26 (23.1%) compared to Hawaii's 12-of-27 (44.4%) from the floor.
Junior Alyssa Morris (pictured) and freshman Tre'Shonti Nottingham led UCR with 14 points apiece, while Dita Liepkalne led the Rainbow Wahine with 12. Morris also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists, while Nottingham added a game-high four steals.
The Highlanders now head to Nashville, TN on Friday, Nov. 21 for a 5:00 pm tip off against the #22/20 ranked Commodores of Vanderbilt.
