Box Score - Oklahoma State 69, UC Riverside 46
Stillwater, OK - After breaking from competition for 12 days due to finals, the UC Riverside women's basketball team (2-6) returned to the court at Oklahoma State on Thursday evening looking to break their two-game losing skid.
The Cowgirls (7-2), who are currently receiving votes in the AP national poll, got the best of the Highlanders, winning 69-46 in front of a crowd of 2,299 at historic Gallagher-Iba Arena. UCR's three-game losing streak is their longest since the 2008-09 squad lost four in a row from Dec. 14-28.
OSU took a 32-18 halftime lead and quickly turned it into a 20-point advantage, 44-24, at the 14:46 mark. UCR then went on an 11-2 run, capped off by a layup from Leah Washington, to cut the lead to 11 at 46-35 with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Over the next four minutes, however, Oklahoma State ran off a 14-5 run of their own to push their lead back out to 20, 60-40, with 7:14 to go in the game. The Highlanders could get no closer than 18 down the stretch as the Cowgirls took home the 69-46 victory.
Alyssa Morris (pictured) led UCR with 13 points and six rebounds while Marissa Rivera added 10 points, eight of them coming in the second half, and five assists. OSU's Tegan Cunningham led all scorers with 26 points.
In the first half, both teams were cold to start the game as neither squad could dent the scoring column until OSU's Lindsey Keller scored on a layup at the 16:34 mark. Just 14 seconds later, the Highlanders were in the books as Brittany Waddell, playing in her first game for UCR since Mar. 14, 2008, hit two free throws to even the score at two apiece.
However, UCR was limited to 18 first-half points on 20.7 percent (6-of-29) shooting as only three players scored in the first period led by nine from Waddell, seven from Morris, and two from Rivera. The Highlanders 20.7 percent shooting was the lowest first-half percentage of the season and the lowest since they shot 18.2 percent (4-of-22) in the first half at UC Davis on Feb. 7, 2009.
The Highlanders countered in the second half by shooting 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from the floor, but the Cowgirls shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) in the period. OSU also out-rebounded UCR 49-36.
The Highlanders conclude their two-game road trip with an 11:00 am PST tip at #22 Kansas on Sunday, Dec. 20 at the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, KS.
