
Softball Wins 8-3 Against San Diego in aTen Construction Invitational

Riverside, CA – The UC Riverside softball team (1-3) picked up their first win of the 2009 season with a 8-3 victory over the University of San Diego in game three of the aTen Construction Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside. UCR's second game of the day against Colorado State was suspended due to weather and will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.
Against the Torreros, the Highlanders got on board in the second inning when senior Krystal Marquez (Riverside, CA) singled to score Brittany Keeney (Canyon Lake, CA) from third. San Diego answered in the fourth, though, to knot the game at one apiece, but UCR used a seven-run fifth inning to seal the game.
After two straight walks and a Marissa Alvidrez (Bakersfield, CA) single that advanced the runners, Jojo Mendoza (San Jose, CA) singled to score Brooke Hebenton (Beaumont, CA) from third. A balk by the San Diego pitcher then scored another run. After two more consecutive walks that scored another Highlander run, Kameryn Hebenton (Beaumont, CA) tripled to clear the bases. Tiana Towns (Perris, CA) then singled to plate K. Hebenton, giving UCR an 8-1 advantage.
Alvidrez (1-2) picked up the win for the Highlanders, pitching all seven innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. K Hebenton led UCR with three RBI whilte Kenney added two hits and two runs.
Against Colorado State, UCR was trailing 2-0 in the second inning but will resume tomorrow morning with the bases loaded and no outs.
In the first two games of the aTen Construction Invitational, Tulsa beat Colorado State 4-1 and then defeated San Diego 6-0.
