Berkeley, CA - The UC Riverside baseball team (0-1) opened up their 2009 season with an 8-7 loss at California on Friday afternoon at the Evans Diamond in Berkeley, CA. UCR held a 6-4 lead after six innings but allowed the Bears (1-0) to score four runs in the seventh to claim the victory.
The Highlanders got on board early as they scored two runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third innings. With the bases loaded and no outs in the first, Michael Hur (Stevenson Ranch, CA) singled through the right side to score Carl Uhl (Phelan, CA) from third. Ryan Goetz's (Temple City, CA) fielder's choice then scored Bryan Horst (Riverside, CA) from third to give UCR an early 2-0 lead.
The Bears, though, responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and one run in the second to even out the score.
After a scoreless fourth inning on both sides, Hur came up big again for the Highlanders by hitting a two-RBI home run in the top of the fifth inning, increasing UCR's lead to 6-4. Cal proved tenacious, however, by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 8-6 lead. UCR added one more run in the eighth, but could not could score again as the Bears took home an 8-7 win.
Hur led UCR with three RBI, three hits, and two runs. Paul Bargas (Riverside, CA) got the starting nod for the Highlanders, allowing six runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work. Kevin Dickey (Mission Viejo, CA) picked up the loss for UCR, pitching 0.2 innings in relief but allowing two runs on four hits.
UCR battles with the Bears in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 21 beginning at 11:00 am at Evans Diamond Field in Berkeley.
