Long Beach, CA – Led by double digit scoring from seniors Kemie Nkele (San Diego, CA), Ronéy Friend (Los Angeles, CA), and Seyram Gbewonyo (Sylmar, CA), the UC Riverside women’s basketball team won their record-setting 11th consecutive game 64-48 against Long Beach State at the Walter Pyramid on Friday evening in Big West Conference action. UCR improves to 16-9 on the year and 11-1 in conference play, claiming a share of first place in the standings with UC Santa Barbara.
Up by two at half, the Highlanders used a 21-1 run over an eight minute span in the middle of the second half to open up a 56-36 lead with seven minutes remaining. UCR limited the 49ers (7-18, 3-9) to 19 second-half points on 13.3 percent shooting as the Highlanders scored 33 second-half points to take the 64-48 win.
Nkele led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting, four assists and three blocks, while Friend added a season-high 18 points on 7-of-12 from the floor. UCR's win is their 11th straight, setting a new school record for most consecutive wins.
In the first half, a seesaw battle ensued as there was seven lead changes and one tie score. Down 18-12 at the 10:53 mark, the Highlanders rallied for seven straight points to take a 19-18 lead in a 1:50 span. UCR scored 18 of their 31 points in the paint and shot 44.8 percent from the field, compared to the 49ers 14 points in the paint and 44.4 percent shooting from the field. Nkele led all scorers in the first half with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
