Tallahassee, FL - After falling in both games yesterday afternoon to begin the Seminole Classic, the UC Riverside softball team looked to pick things up on Sunday on day two of the tournament, but fell to East Carolina 3-0 and Florida State 13-2 at JoAnne Graf Field.
In the first game, freshman Amy Lwin (San Dimas, CA) got the starting nod for UCR - the first of her career - but allowed East Carolina to score two runs in the first inning and one in the fourth.
The Highlanders threatened in the second inning with two outs and the bases loaded, but could not convert a run. In the third inning UCR again had runners in scoring position but could not plate them.
Lwin picked up her first loss of the season in 3.1 innings of work. Taylor Thomas (Highland, CA) had the lone hit for the Highlanders in the game.
In the Highlanders (2-9) second game of the day against host Florida State (11-3), the Seminoles plated three runs in the third inning and two each in the fourth and fifth innings. UCR got on board in the sixth as a Florida State error scored Kameryn Hebenton (Beaumont, CA) from third, narrowling the margin to 7-1.
The Seminoles, though, exploded in the top of the seventh inning, scoring six runs off relief pitcher Stephanie Marshall (Concord, CA). UCR plated one additional run in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.
Marissa Alvidrez picked up the loss for the Highlanders, going 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs on four hits. Hebenton led UCR with two hits, one run, and one RBI.
UC RIverside returns from the Sunshine State to the Golden State as they next travel to Fullerton, CA for the DeMarini Invitational on Feb. 27 - Mar. 1. The Highlanders face Indiana for the second time of the year on Friday at 11:15 am, followed by Oregon State at 3:45 pm.
