Fullerton, CA - After falling to Big Ten foe Indiana last weekend at the Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, FL, the UC Riverside softball team (3-10) evened out the score as they picked up a 6-1 win against the Hoosiers in the first game of the DeMarini Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Friday morning. In UCR's second game of the day, the Highlanders fell 9-0 to PAC-10 opponent Oregon State.
UCR tallied a season-high 10 hits against Indiana as they scored one run in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the seventh. The Highlanders held the Hoosiers' (1-12) bats at bay as Marissa Alvidrez (Bakersfield, CA) (3-5) struck out four batters in seven innings of four-hit work, allowing a solo home run as Indiana's lone score of the day.
UCR got on board in the second inning when Krystal Marquez's (Riverside, CA ) single to right field drove in Brittany Keeney (Canyon Lake, CA) from third, giving the Highlanders an early 1-0 lead.
Keeney was then walked to lead off the fourth inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jojo Mendoza (San Jose, CA). Taylor Thomas (Highland, CA) then singled to right center, plating Keeney from second. After two consecutive singles from Katie Curtis (Highland, CA) and Krystal Marquez to load the bases, Tiana Towns (Perris, CA) hit a two RBI single that drove in the runners from second and third.
Up 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning, the Highlanders added two insurance runs as Thomas's two RBI single plated Keeney from second and Alvidrez from third. Thomas led UCR with three RBI, two hits, and one run, while Kenney added three runs and two hits.
Against Oregon State (8-9), the Highlanders could not string enough hits together as they were held without a run for the sixth time this season. UCR had an opportunity in the third to get some runs on the board, but with the bases loaded Alvidrez grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Beavers scored one run in the second, added four in the third, and scored two additional in the sixth and seventh. Stephanie Marshall (0-4) pitched six innings for the Highlanders, allowing seven runs on 12 hits. Amanda Klimzcak came in for relief in the seventh and allowed two runs on three hits.
The Highlanders continue play at the DeMarini Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a 9:00 am tilt against Stanford and a 11:15 am game against Minnesota.
