UC Riverside 11, UCLA 1 - Box Score
UC Riverside (3-1) banged out 12 hits and scored a season-high 11 runs in upending No. 10 UCLA, 11-1, Wednesday evening at the Bruins’ Jackie Robinson Stadium. It was just the second win for the Highlanders over UCLA (2-3) in their last seven tries.
UCR struck early putting six on the board in the second aided by a series of miscues by Bruins starter Brooks Gavin. Gavin opened the inning by hitting Ryan Goetz, Tony Nix and Daniel Pellegrino loading the bases before recording the first out of the inning. Brian McConkey promptly doubled to left center plating all three Highlanders’ runners to give UCR a 3-0 lead.
Carl Uhl followed with a walk, and Brooks plunked his fourth batter of the inning when he nailed Trevor Hairgrove re-loading the bases. Brooks gave way to Charles Brewer. Joey Gonzales greeted him with a single to center scoring one. A Bryan Horst sac fly scored the fourth run of the inning or UCR, while Joey Gonzales's single brought home the fifth run and an errant pick of attempts allowed Uhl to score the sixth run of the evening. The Highlanders weren’t done, however, as they scored one run in the third and two each in the fifth and sixth.
On the other side of the ball, UCR starter Ryan Platt got out of a bases loaded two-out jam in the first inning and allowed just three baserunners over his remaining five innings on he mound. In six innings, Platt (1-0) gave up just three hits and three walks, while striking out eight.
Dustin Emmons relived Platt in the seventh and didn’t miss a beat retiring the Bruins in order in the seventh and allowing just a two-out double in the eighth. UCLA put an end to the shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth when they touched UCR reliever Mike Wolford for three hits and one run, but with runners on second and third with two outs, Wolford got Niko Gallego to fly out to end the ballgame.
McConkey finished with four RBIs on the day raising his team-leading total to six. Goetz scored three runs and added a pair of RBIs while Uhl scored two runs.
UC Riverside begins its 2009 home schedule with a four-game series against San Francisco tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. PT.
