UC Riverside 8, USF 2 - Box Score
Riverside, CA – The San Francisco Dons were back at the Riverside Sports Complex on Saturday, facing off against UC Riverside for the third of a four-game series. After a 5-4 win in 13 innings the previous night, the Highlanders made it two in a row with their 8-2 victory, taking a 2-1 lead in the series.
The offensive fireworks started early for the Highlanders (5-2) as in the first inning right-fielder Tony Nix drove in a pair of runs off a triple down the left field line. Designated-hitter Brandon Schnebly then singled to plate Nix, giving UCR a 3-0 lead.
Their bats stayed hot in the second when UC Riverside benefited from a homerun off the bat of an unlikely source of power. Center-fielder and leadoff man Carl Uhl faked a bunt with men on first and second, then with a charging Don’s first baseman he pulled the bat back and smacked the pitch over the left field wall, extending the Highlander’s lead to six.
In the third, UC Riverside scored again when Trevor Hairgrove hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Brian McConkey from third. Mimicking the third inning, McConkey led off the fifth with another double, this one to right-center. He then stole third, and was once again driven in by a Hairgrove sacrifice fly.
The San Francisco bats were kept quiet for much of the game, though they were able to scrape one across the plate in the fifth when three singles resulted in a run by second baseman Robert Abel. USF again scored in the top of the eighth, but could get no more runs on board as the Highlanders came away with the 8-2 victory.
UCR right-hander Matt Montgomery picked up his second win on the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one run on six hits while striking out three. Garrett Luippold took the loss for San Francisco (3-5), allowing seven runs on nine hits.
The Highlanders conclude the four-game series with a 1:00 pm tilt against the Dons on Sunday, March 1 at the Riverside Sports Complex.
