The UC Riverside Women's Softball Team traveled to Cathedral City, CA to open up its 2009 season with a pair of games against Top-25 competition at the Cathedral City Kickoff at Big League Dreams Sports Park.
The first game saw senior Stephanie Marshall, who made just four starts in conference play a year ago due to an arm injury, take the hill to face the 13th-ranked Houston Cougars. She lasted three innings for the Highlanders, giving way to junior Marissa Alvidrez in the fourth. UCR's offense struggled throughout the game as the Highlanders came out on the short end of a 5-0 decision.
Alvidrez took to the circle for the second game as well, this time getting the start against No. 22 Georgia. The Highlanders offense struggled again managing just four hits in the five-inning contest, Uncharacteristically for UC Riverside, the team's defense faltered as well, as six UCR errors contributed to 10 unearned Bulldogs runs. Georgie scored seven runs in the first, six in the second and three in the fourth to earn the 16-0 win.
The Highlanders participation in the Cathedral City Kickoff concludes tomorrow, February 7, with a 1 pm start against Southern Illinois and an 8 pm tilt against Liberty.
